Jawaharlal Nehru and the Poets.

The Discovery of India by Shree Jawaharlal Nehru, Chapter 4, Epics, history, tradition and myth. 99. Penguin books.

Gradually the days of the Vedic and other gods and goddesses receded into the background and hard and abstruse philosophy took their place. But in the minds of the people these images still floated, companions in joy and friends in distress, symbols of their own felt ideals and aspirations. And around poets wrapped their fancies and built the houses of their dreams, full of rich embroidery and lovely fantasy. Many of these legends and poets fancies have been delightfully adapted by F.W.Bain in his series of little books containing stories from Indian mythology. In one of these, The Digit of the Moon, we are told of the creation of woman.

‘In the beginning, when Twashtri (The divine Artificer) came to the creation of woman he found that he had exhausted his materials in the making of man and that no solid elements were left. In this dilemma, after profound meditation, he did as follows: he took the rotundity of the moon, the curves of the creepers, and the clinging of the tendrils, and the trembling of grass, and the slenderness of the reed, and the bloom of flowers, and the lightness of leaves, and the tapering of the elephants trunk, and the glances of the deer, and the clustering of rows of bees, and the joyous gaiety of sunbeams, and the weeping of clouds, and the fickleness of the winds, and the timidity of the hare, and the vanity of the peacock, and the softness of the parrot’s bosom, and the hardness of adamant, and the sweetness of honey, and the cruelty of the tiger, and the warm glow of fire, and the coldness of snow, and the chattering of jays, and the cooing of the kokila, and the hypocrisy of the crane, and the fidelity of the chakravaka: and compounding all these together, he made woman and gave her to man’.

In line with F.W.Bain, contemporary poet, J.J. Judilson writes about the practical implications and limitations of the divine artistry by the Twashtriji.

He Rules The World; She Rules Him..

Herculean was his built,
lilly-ean was she to the hilt.
Together they made the frame,
immortal, perfect to the hall of fame.

He ruled the world,
king of the herd,
she sewed him bad,
goregon to the unlucky fad.

Conquered were the nations,
manicured were her nails and mansions ,
skyward were his passions,
pampered were her bashes and bastions,
stone was he in war,
pearl he becomes in the sinful hour.

Wise ,wise,wise said the masses,
ripe, serene and silky were her trespasses,
wineful and sinful,bashful and soulful,
berserk,sinister,but only a handful,
for this monsterous,material lady,
he was just a big sugar body.

The world was his hunting ground,
he shoots the stars with his hissing sounds,
on the search for the wider horizons,
rubbing shoulders with the lesser scions.
the night brought with it a melancholy tune,
she was there with him in her ,
ant ruling a sand dune.

Miserly was he in art,
masterly was she in it, lady Mozart.
reptilian would be her ganglia,
avia would be her crania,
into his heart she will crawl and fly,
still he will be ,till the moment he dies.

The laws of nature are few and crude,
the silence, the truth is not new and few.
harsh is the reality,
mushy is the incredibility,
bickering on it will not make you a deity,
move with the flow, be it fast or slow,
he will always move the world, she will always move him,
merrily aho...

This poem was written by the author at Agfest 2006, an annual festival at college, in 30 minutes at an extempore creative writing contest. It won the first prize and the 'attention deprived' author managed to garner a few fans in the campus.

Yet another sleepless night!

- When the world seemed too hard to conquer and there was nothing left for me.
- When I knew that I am my own enemy and yet I did not have the will power and motivation to fight it.
- When I realised the enormity of my mind and its capitulations and yet looked helplessly at the time that passed by.
- When I had an awestruck expression on my face at life’s endless questions and challenges: simple yet ambiguous, small yet compound.
- When I felt like I am my own and the whole world, seen and unseen, was conspiring to see my back.
- When some of the dark, unwelcome clouds refuse to cease shrouding me and pass by me leaving me clothed in cold despair.
- When my actions mocked at my dreams and the rest of the world only cared to enjoy this humiliation and disgrace.
- When I did not remember my self, I lost my mind including the talents associated therewith and the whole world accepted my distorted self as my self.
- When mediocre mortals had to stoop down to decide the way I was and I had learnt to accept them as life’s lessons.
-
When I knew that I could trust God yet had self doubt and overpowering fear.
- When I harboured the pain of hosting the Big fight between God and Satan within my body and mind.
- When I felt helpless although I knew that my duty at that situation was to take God’s wonderful side, remember his promise and rest in peace.

PS: This will pass too.

Flying away!

The angel flew away into the clouds,

The pain in my heart seeps,

abundant emptiness shrouds,earth leaps

I close my eyes and float in the ocean,

An ocean of memories , of a life, moments unlived, unseen

dreamt in heaven, sincerety, emotional elan.

Did I hear that time flies?

My time has been maimed with lies.

I didnt ask you to adorn my life,

Nor could I promise to adorn yours,

My thoughts cramped self,

T'was a request for an expression to praise and marvel,

One that fixed me, taxing in emotional upheaval.

Lost in clouds, are you?

I see you , each moment, rich and anew,

Shant I open my eyes, leave one bit of you nice,

Dreading to let go the pain of you,

curbing strength's rise, seeing darkness as your disguise.

The eagle.

I am like the eagle,
That flies high.
Up above the clouds array,
I sometime stoop low to my roots for prey,
To quench my desire and many other evil,
Like I should be, always, like an eagle.

Oh God, my maker and guardian!
Give me strength and carry me on,
Horizon after horizon in your glory shall I fly on.
Let me keep flying high and not low for prey,
So that in front of nothing other than you, I pray
Shall I bow on my way.

An optimist.

My sister wrote this poem a couple of years ago. I didnt make much of it then. Now I do.
I saw a dream; I am hurt
I knew it was a sham,
Yet I tried to be an optimist,
But it had to struck me,
It was all a sham you shattered me,
I was blind; I saw a dream,
I heard your plosive sound,
Still murmuring in my ears.
You are a tenuous individual to me now,
U can’t break me,
I am efficacious to break the evil strands,
My smile, construe my intelligence,
I am diligent,
My innocence construes my strength,
Will cover the interstice in my life,
Nothing is impermeable,
After all I am an optimist

The tulips are (were) dejected.

How my mind wills, if only it was untrue,
My heart yearns, reverse time right through.
You were a heavenly butterfly, brought abundant happiness,
Swaying your way through life defining indefinite finesse.

The memories have dried on my heart so dearly
Of a dash that was that was so lovely, surreal and rosy.
The tulips were happy in the bright life’s sunshine,
The little drought saw a flood, sent crashing one on nine.

Healing

Didnt I know these pleasures of the world,
Until I scraped myself in you and life,
Myself,involved and rigoured.
Needed never I, the warmth of nature,
Until time revealed life, an ugly unfilled caricature.
When life cracks and castles tumble to dusty shacks,
Good Lady! Step onto these sins, chilling and healing,
Your feet will be washed , divine cleansing and delightful singing,
This embracing breeze shall love you always,
When I and the world are, well far far gone.
And you might want to be here,
looking a cure for life, scrape prone..

Two lives.

The smile, the grace and the breeze
pain of my heart creeps, an extra lease.
Thy existence, adorned, heavenly, with a smile on
Withstands my shout, inside the glass, you go on.
I ain’t seeing a tither of change, your emotions,
your happy resonance and innocent devotions.
Break, swear, rampage and tear the innocent earth
Curse the glass, open my jaws, self anger, I unearth.
Forget my life, lose myself in grief

I like to believe

Breach it was, wholesome, only for a brief.
Deep within I was calm with His embracing daze
Understood I, the unknown,what is,
Closed my eyes, and see the unseen bliss,

Expanse

Across the world’s expanse,
My thoughts are the midnight’s sea.

Some elements do seep through trance,
Like the expanse between you and me.

Smile not!

Smile not that piercing scathe,
They rob me of all that I hath,
Hope, strength, and goodness
I Wonder, why this meakness.

Thou art a glorious vine,
The land where the sun will shine.
Thine grace will redeem the lame,
Put a horizon of orchids to shame.

Thou is not the storm that breaks bastions,
Thou art the breeze, setting my mind, chimes in emotions.
Keep moving, you, across abound creation,
Setting up life, beautiful, fulfilling His vision.

God's child.

Oh lady,
Heavenly breeze, creation glorious,
Thy beauty and wisdom captivate the ingenuous,
All existence looks on as you go past,
You must be certainly blessed, you must.
Thy sight I gaze at, everywhere, at all space,
My reason, mind and the unreasonable solace.
Cross not with my self, for thine majestic sake,
Thine sensuality and sinful play, I pray, not are fake.
God’s children are watched over, well kempt,
Thou shalt be one, or may not be, inept.
My sight and existence is not mine,
Driven around in a journey, most wonderful and divine.
Thou interruptions shall take shape,
On thy goodness alone, whilst I remain in a blissful agape.
The worldly canter on, beautiful and ugly,
God’s children will walk on insulant; Blessed and Princely

The leaf with wings.

As I float on air,

Carried on by my wings and the Wind,

Yearning to float on my own will,

Guided by the wind, cease as it never will.

Happened to kiss a few raindrops,(unintentionally),

(Now)waiting for them, expectations, all the sops,

Sometimes I anticipated,

Only to be reminded of the misunderstood.

I was desperate, Desolate and distraught,

The timing was hardly immaculate,

Realised the power of the Wind,

someone who is mighty, omniscient and overly kind.

Told myself to land sometimes,

Took off again, jealous were all other subjects,

There were many other leaves in the air,

Most flew , wanting to fly higher.

Raindrops splattered on them, didnt they bother,

They beat the wind, or so does it occur,

Few did fly, drop laden and glisten,

My flight is a bliss, a lot to sing and listen.

Know I don't of my flight,

Swift, plain, magnificient, and light,

Know I not my direction,

Peaceful, tranquil, blissful and everything in connection,

I fly on, for the raindrops and the Wind,

Glisten will I all along, thanks and praise in mind.

Hailstorm.

Looking down in deep despair,

hating to close my eyes, avoid the nightmare,

Trying to control the vibrations in my head,

pleading the earth to open up, take me ahead.

I hear the knocks on my windows,

I wonder what more, to me to be endowed.

Hailstorm.

They were there for me to die for,

Lift me up above thoughts, a place so far,

Where I danced in my thoughts,

Carefree, happy and tied to them in a million knots,

They fell on the earth and played around,

Happiness for me, needn't anymore look around.

Thank you God.

Way!!!

As I am on a desultory spree,
My mind tries hard to set me free,
What is it that I need to feel?
For God to pay heed and cool my heel.

The wind strikes me on my stroll,
I understand it to be God's knell,
Enjoy I always did the nature's vile.
Decoy it is, take it as God’s smile
.
Down the road as I go,
Frothing my head in subtle imbroglio,
A deft pain makes me seethe,
I realise the skin of my teeth.

There it is, the answer to all my questions,
Should savour life, clear in all calculations,
Follow my purpose, shout the success,
Adore my God and value the nexus.

orchids

How I wish to have known you lady?

All I think has your shades cravy......

Sometimes I doubt my state of mind.

Am I in it or have lost it in the time gone by....

Why is that happening to me?

Sheer purgatory, really and not a lame excuse.

Why am I feeling servile without you??

are you the consolation that a weak mind brewed??

Where are you taking me O God??

Will I ever find her? Please do nod..

Whatever and whenever, ready I will always be..

Merry it should be when I and the orchid dance in glee...

What are you ?

I may not get you,
I even don't know if I deserve you.
you seem to be made of something regal,
I feel like a scribbling by someone frugal.

You the wind cruise in all splendor,
appreciation from the storm, destructive in me deep under.
You thrash me hard wicked, cruel angel,
try I did my luck in life, that rare little drizzle.

stop soothing my eyes at all the right places,
quit pinching my sick little heart, fed up of of races.,
cease mocking my existense, leave me atleast the traces.

I am sorry, I really dont know what you are.Leave me alone.hehehehe
